“Pilots don’t crash airplanes because they want to,” says Collins, but even experienced pilots do. The best way to stay out of an accident report, he suggests, is to understand and manage the risks inherent in flying—every time you get in an airplane. In this completely new book, Collins shares some personal insights learned from his lifetime of flying in general aviation airplanes.

You’ll learn
• The three word emergency checklist every pilot should know
• Why a pilot’s thought processes matter more than his experience
• Why Collins decided to stop flying as pilot in command—on his own terms
• The unique challenges (and rewards) of night flying
• Why some airplane types have poor accident records
• How to manage technology in the cockpit, and when it’s doing more harm than good

Throughout, Collins uses real life examples from his vast experience to illustrate each point. This book is a must-have for any pilot who wants to make their next hour a safer one.

The Next Hour The most important hour in your logbook Richard L Collins eBook

Richard has been around the block, no doubt. His experience and statistical knowledge provides some deep insight into the current world of private aviation. I think anyone newly interested in flying or currently in the air can gain from reading this book. He has been a favorite of pilots around the world for some time and this book clearly shows why. His writing is clear and concise, he conveys ideas very well and it is presented in a personable, almost informal chat method. The knowledge he imparts is valuable.

Highly recommended.

The Next Hour The most important hour in your logbook Richard L Collins eBook Reviews

Read this book for the third time. Excellent writing and excellent observations about what makes flying fun and safe. The basic mind set of thinking about the next hour solves a lot of problems with the false notion that you can somehow bank your hours.
the book was pure Richard Collins, whom I've read most of my life, and as such I loved the book. Some not used to Richard may feel it was a little tedious and full of random details, but all this is to my liking. I am an active IFR pilot, and am constantly trying to evaluate the risk involved in my flying, the book addresses this very well, using Richard's in-depth evaluations of the statistics that are out there. If the risk of using an airplane for transportation in all weather is important to you, this is the book for you.
The Next Hour is about aviation safety. It points out the errors, with specific examples, that have caused avoidable accidents, costing so many lives and so much damage. What is interesting is that the majority of these accidents are caused by very experienced pilots. The reason could be as people get more experienced, they tend to become complacent and begin to ignore good practice. The lesson here is that regardless of the aviation experience you may have, nothing beats good practice. When you are up there in the skies, there are no guarantees. So, do everything that is necessary before, during and after the flight to ensure that you keep yourself and others safe.
Fairly well written, a bit dry at times. Interesting if you’re interested in fact- and statistically- based decision making in aviation.
What could have been a dry and lifeless analysis of the statistics has been made real and relevant by the true life stories sprinkled throughout to illustrate the dozen or so factors that cause the majority of General Aviation accidents, many of which bring flying careers to an end.
The depth of Richard’s knowledge, experience and infectious love of flying is evident throughout the book as he tackles not only the hows but also investigates the why factors involved.
As a flight instructor myself I am fully aware that without constant vigilance we can all fall into many of the same traps.
Whether you are a licensed pilot or an observer keenly interested in why perfectly good airplanes come to grief this is a must read.
A great read if you're an Aviation buff. Written by a person who knows, and obviously cares a great deal. If safety isn't your No 1 concern, there's no point in flying.
I obtained my Private Pilot's license in 2004 and immediately obtained an Instrument rating afterwards. I've read many books about flying over the years and have to say that Richard Collins' books, including this one, are the best of the bunch. What really stands out is the wisdom that he's gained from decades of experience flying GA airplanes. These books help you develop a knowledge base to allow you to recognize and manage situations that arise in real world flying that might otherwise sneak up on you with potentially disastrous consequences. I reread my shelf of his books every year or so and keep learning new things.
